Baptism

Baptism is the fundamental sacrament of our entry into the life of Christ in the Church. It is the gateway to all the other sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Baptism gives us new birth into Christ; it washes away our sins; it initiates us into the Paschal Mystery; and it incorporates us into the communion of saints.

The preeminent day to celebrate Baptism is the Lord ’s Day, or Sunday, when the community is gathered for the Eucharistic feast at Mass. At St. Francis we celebrate the baptism of children during our Sunday Mass.

For adults the preeminent Sunday is Easter itself, and at St. Francis we celebrate Adult baptisms at the Easter Vigil (unless there is an emergency) after the person has gone through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
