Breadline for the Poor

It this time of year, many of us have begun to make plans for the celebration of this glorious feast of Christmas, and pretty soon, many more will be caught up in the usual hustle and bustle of the season.   Exchanging and sharing presents is a very special tradition because with a simple gift we let someone know that they are loved and cared for. I wish to ask you to join me into  bringing a little bit of joy and hope to a homeless and needy person.

Every morning, we start the day by giving out sandwiches, coffee and other goodies to hundreds of anonymous people whose presence on the Breadline is a clear indication of their poverty.  For many, this simple meal given may be the only nourishment they will receive.  A warm smile from the friars and volunteers may be the only greeting they will receive.   There are no trimmings, or presents.

Each Christmas, here at St. Francis Church, we prepare gift packages to give to the people who visit the Breadline.  The gifts include a scarf, a pair of warm gloves, a hat, socks and shirts.  Some of these items are beautifully handmade by talented people who gladly give their time.  People caring for people!

I invite you to join with us to participate in this wonderful tradition and help make a special gift to a hungry person on the Breadline.  You can help someone know that they are not alone, that someone cares.  Your support will bring a gift of warmth, love and hope to a person who truly has no one to care for them.

Share the Good News of God’s love in His gift to us of His son.

“As ye do to the least of my people you do to me.”

Honor God’s gift to us with a gift to those in greatest need.

- Fr. Michael Carnavele
